Benevilla, the West Valley’s premier human services nonprofit, announced today that District 4 Councilperson Ken Remley from the City of Surprise along with Stillwater Landscape Management and Benevilla garden volunteers will host a “Spring Clean Up” Saturday, May 20th of the Surprise Community Garden located on the Benevilla Campus at Hellen and John M. Jacobs Independence Plaza, 16752 N Greasewood St., Surprise, AZ, 85374.
Councilmember Remley is asking for local residents and businesses interested in spending a fun and relaxing morning “sprucing up” our local landmark to join him from 7a.m. to 10a.m. at the Benevilla campus. Mr. Remley commented: “The community garden is a wonderful example of the partnership between Benevilla and the City of Surprise. This is place where our community can come together to learn, interact and really appreciate the beauty of our city.”
The Surprise Community Garden, opened in 2012, is a “Community For All Ages” (CFAA) program led by Benevilla in partnership with the City of Surprise and Rio Salado College.
This garden serves as an important space for area residents, children, and local organizations to learn about growing organic food in a desert environment. Individuals and groups can rent their own garden plot to grow produce for themselves or to donate to local food banks. There are currently 100 gardeners working 34 raised-soil beds which are built at a height friendly to young children and wheelchair-bound gardeners.
Volunteers are asked to dress comfortably and bring their own gloves and gardening tools. They will work hand in hand with landscaping professionals removing weeds, trimming shrubs and rejuvenating the garden grounds. Please contact Linda Cabrera, the Benevilla Surprise Community Garden Outreach Coordinator for details and to RSVP at (602) 339-7036.
