Luncheon with the Consul General of Mexico

I was honored to attend a luncheon hosted by the Consul General of Mexico Jorge Mendoza Yescas in Phoenix on December 4. There were a number of other councilmembers from across the state in attendance which created an open dialogue to discuss collaborative opportunities. I really appreciate the chance to work together towards common goals.

New Hours for Hollyhock Library

Effective Monday, January 6, the City of Surprise and Maricopa County Library District will offer expanded hours at the Hollyhock Library. City Council approved funding to increase the weekly hours from 18 to 36. This change will provide residents more access to a variety of library programs and resources. The new hours for Hollyhock Library will be as follows:

Monday through Thursday: 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Friday: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m.

MLK Day of Celebration & Service

The City of Surprise will host a community day of celebration and service to recognize the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event will begin at the City Hall Courtyard at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast. At 9:00 a.m., there will be a short program to include a keynote speaker and musical performances. The service projects will begin upon conclusion of the program at approximately 9:45 a.m. This is a great opportunity for all residents to give back to the community and work together for Surprise.

There are many opportunities to get involved in this Day of Service including sponsorships and volunteer opportunities for individuals, families and groups. Also, we would love to hear your suggestions for service projects to be completed. Please call 623-222-1500 or visit

Economic Development

The Angry Crab Shack opened its doors in the Bell Mar Complex, 11340 W. Bell Road. This seafood restaurant combines Asian and Cajun flavors to give customers a new look on traditional seafood favorites. The Angry Crab Shack has been locally owned and operated since 2013. Welcome to Surprise!

Deck the Hock

The Annual Deck the Hock Event was held at the Surprise Senior Center on December 10. This event allows residents an opportunity to enjoy holiday cheer. Attendees were able to participate in music, crafts and this year, we even had snow!

City Awarded Grant

The City of Surprise was awarded a grant from Tohono O’odham Nation to assist our Human Services and Community Vitality Department with several programs and initiatives. These programs include the Crisis Assistance Fund, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, Expanding After School and Summer Programming and the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Celebration. AZ TechCelerator

The City of Surprise is now offering a new online platform that will enable small businesses and startups in the community to come together to share information and stories as well as create a common space to build their businesses.
